Расследование по делу GAWminers началось ещё в 2014 году. Так что Джоша Гарза можно назвать одним из первых криптовалютных аферистов. Он зарегистрировал 2 компании (GAWminers и ZenMiners) и запустил собственную криптовалюту PayCoin (XPY)
Все начинания завершились скамом
Гарза занялся продажей контрактов на облачный майнинг, не сообщив, что ни один из его пулов не располагает необходимой мощностью. Так что выплаты производились за счёт поступлений от вновь зарегистрировавшихся пользователей.
Первый судебный процесс против компаний Гарза Комиссия по ценным бумагам и биржам США выиграла ещё 3 года назад. Тогда же стало известно, что PayCoin является продолжением мошеннической схемы. Так Гарза хотел избежать краха своих компаний.
PayCoin функционировала на базе алгоритма SHA-256. Для достижения консенсуса использовались как PoS, так и PoW. Гарза обещал, что цена XPY никогда не опустится ниже $20. В действительности она не поднялась выше $15,92.
Срок тюремного заключения Гарза начнётся 4 января 2019 года. Кроме этого, он должен выплатить вкладчикам $9,2 млн.
