За последний год майнеры неплохо заработали на транзакциях, стоимость которых подорожала на 700%. Этой ситуацией обеспокоены остальные участники сообщества. К примеру, аналитик портала The Block Ларри Чермак говорит, что в августе за проведение транзакции майнеры заработали порядка $115,3 млн. Их доходы в 3 раза превышают доход BTC-майнеров ($39,2 млн за август).
In the month of August, Ethereum miners generated $115.3 million in fees. Bitcoin miners generated only $39.2 million in the same time period — about three times less than Ethereum miners.

Комиссии в Ethereum напрямую связаны с потреблением газа. По данным GlassNode, в течении 2020 года потребление газа постоянно растет из-за чего средняя комиссия за обработку транзакций 31 августа составила $6,632.
Рост потребления газа (вычислительной мощности, необходимой для обработки транзакций или реализации смарт-контракта в блокчейне) связано с ростом популярности приложений из сферы децентрализованных финансов (DeFi).
О популярности таких приложений свидетельствует и тот факт, что децентрализованная биржа Uniswap (главный потребитель газа) недавно обошла биржу Coinbase по объему торгов.

Виталик Бутерин написал в своем Twitter призыв к благотворительным организациям, чтобы вторые использовали ETH для приема пожертвований. Виталик признал, что проблема с комиссиями реально существует, но это и проблема сообщества – участники сети не используют существующие протоколы второго уровня, которые направлены на масштабирование блокчейна.
