Дочерняя компания Medici Ventures, специализирующаяся на разработке блокчейн от Overstock, является причиной ощутимых потерь для компании. В 2017 году Medici потеряла 22 миллиона долларов, а за первые девять месяцев 2018 года она уже принесла убытки на 39 миллионов долларов. Общие потери для Overstock составили 163,7 млн долларов за отчетный период 2018 года.
Тем не менее Бирн остается оптимистично настроенным относительно будущего своих блокчейн проектов:
«Мне все равно, потеряет ли tZero (один из проектов, поддерживаемый Medici Ventures) 2 миллиона долларов в месяц. Мы думаем, что у нас хорошие перспективы по развитию блокчейн», — объяснил он в интервью.
Overstock был запущен еще в 1999 году для продажи излишков и возврата товаров в Интернете. Также компания является «пионером» в криптовалютной индустрии, так как стала одной из первых крупных фирм, принимающих биткоин с 2014 года.
