Австралийский суд приговорил к двум годам тюремного заключения Кэтрин Нгуен, укравшую 100 000 XPR в январе 2018 года. Она – первый в истории страны фигурант подобного дела.
Обвинение было озвучено еще в 2018 году, но Нгуен признала свою вину лишь в августе 2019 года. А в октябре 2021 года у нее появится право на условно-досрочное освобождение.
Судья Крис Крейги назвал свое решение «сложным и удручающим» и подчеркнул, что о ней отзываются как о «щедром и трудолюбивом» человеке.
«Злоумышленница всегда готова прийти на помощь окружающим. Совершенное преступление не характерно для Нгуен, ее моральным убеждениям», — сказал судья.
В судебных делах указано, что в январе 2018 года она с подельником взломали почту 56-летнего однофамильца, используя SIM-свопинг. В тот момент XRP торговался у исторического максимума в $3,84.
После кражи Нгуен перевела средства на одну из китайских бирж и конвертировала монеты в BTC, распределив их по разным кошелькам.
В 2019 году полиция изъяла у Нгуен компьютеры, телефоны и деньги. На похищенные средства осужденная открыла бизнес по ремонту дизайнерских сумочек и обуви.
