Ранее фирма планировала выйти на IPO, однако получение гигантских убытков в первых трех кварталах 2018 года поставили процесс преобразования Bitmain в публичную компанию под вопрос. Новость о грядущих увольнениях впервые появилась в Twitter директора по стратегическим направлениям Blockstream Самсона Моу:
«Bitmain увольняет всю команду Copernicus всего за одну неделю. Многие только пришли в компанию. Увольнение к Рождеству».

В дальнейшем в Twitter появились сообщения, подтверждавшие новость от Моу. Китайское здание Sanyan Finance получило комментарии от работников Bitmain, утверждающие, что с некоторыми сотрудниками были проведены беседы в отделе кадров.
Ранее, в начале декабря, Bitmain вынуждена была полностью закрыть исследовательское отделение в Израиле, в результате чего работу потеряли 23 человека. Уволенный глава израильского филиала компании Гади Гликберг (Gadi Glikberg) отметил:
«В последнее время криптовалютный рынок пережил экстремальные потрясения, что заставило Bitmain провести ревизию своей структуры по всему миру и переориентировать свой бизнес в соответствии с нынешними требованиями».
В настоящее время неизвестно о начале глобальных увольнений по всем подразделениям компании, подтверждение получило только сокращение пекинского отдела Copernicus. Всего в Bitmain сейчас работает до 2000 человек. По данным китайской прессы, без работы могут оказаться около 300 человек.
